Treatment for Younger Kids
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that parents bring their child for an initial exam at age 7. Most kids won’t need treatment at such an early age, but having an exam will help identify any issues that may be best addressed with early, interceptive treatment. With early treatment we can take the least invasive approach to address any issues that, left unchecked, could require more invasive treatment at a later age. However, the vast majority of children don’t need early treatment. That’s why we’ve created our Growth & Guidance program. If your child is in this program, that means they aren’t yet ready for treatment but we’re monitoring them until the time is right. These very important growth and development appointments will be scheduled every 6 to 12 months and are done free of charge.
Options for Adolescents
Between the ages of 11 and 15 is the most common time for orthodontic treatment. By age 12 most of the permanent teeth are in place, and crooked teeth, gaps and bad bites are highly visible. Starting treatment during these years enables us to take advantage of the child’s natural growth to help guide and place the teeth as well as correct the bite.
These days most adolescents have friends in braces and consider it a right of passage. Kids love to choose fun colors for their elastics that help them show their personality. Whether they’re celebrating the colors of a holiday, their favorite sports team or just their own style, colors for braces are a wonderful way for kids to be involved and excited about their orthodontic treatment. After school visits at Laurel Mountain Orthodontics can be lots of fun when kids see their friends from school, church or sports teams! Long before the braces come off, you’ll see the increased confidence that comes from having a great Laurel Mountain Smile.
Teen & Adult Treatment
At Laurel Mountain Orthodontics we have lots of options to choose from, including Invisalign, clear braces and metal braces – with colorful elastics. With so many options we have adults and teens who can love their time in treatment. So whether you want to show the world you’re in treatment or you’d prefer an option that gets the job done without drawing attention to the fact you’re in treatment, we can make it happen.
Treatment options today are faster. Plus, they’re more comfortable and require less frequent visits to our office. Gone are the days when you had to have your braces “tightened” every three weeks! Both the convenience and the wide range of the options have made orthodontics a part of life for youngsters and adults. In fact, we have a number of families where we’ve treated both the kids and the parents. You’re never too old to have a beautiful smile.
Dr. Reed is trained in the Andrews philosophy of treatment, a holistic approach to orthodontics that includes alignment of the teeth, healthy function of the bite, position of the temperomandibular joint and the patients whole face – not just the teeth. Her extensive training in this approach means a Laurel Mountain Smile contributes to the overall health of every patient.
Not too long ago, all orthodontic treatment started with those goopy impressions of the teeth. Most patients found that part of the process kind of messy and not very fun. Now, with our iTero® Scanner, Dr. Reed can capture an accurate, digital scan of your teeth without ever taking a mold. This digital scan only takes a few minutes and then she uses that to plan your treatment. When your treatment is complete, Dr. Reed takes another scan to create a permanent record of your results and to use in fabricating your retainers. You won’t find it everywhere, but it’s one more way that Laurel Mountain Orthodontics demonstrates its patient-focused approach!
